Thank you for contacting us to make an appointment to have ear wax removed and a diagnostic hearing test. Your appointment will take about 60 minutes. Your Audiologist will remove ear wax or other debris blocking the ear canal using a gentle micro-suction. Suctioning is less traumatic than syringing and has a lower risk of infection. After this procedure, your Audiologist will conduct a full diagnostic hearing test.

You will find us at 66 Michaels Ave, Ellerslie.

Here is a more information about our clinic.

A full hearing assessment is completed by the audiologist to establish hearing levels. This hearing test allows us to see where in your ear the hearing loss is coming from. The diagnostic hearing assessment is a battery of tests and assessments. After testing your hearing we will explain your degree of hearing loss and possible causes. If needed we write a report back to your GP or refer you to a specialist in the hospital or privately if needed.

Diagnostic hearing test

Before your ear cleaning appointment

Please do not:

  • Put any shop-bought earwax drops in your ears as this can make the wax more challenging to get out as it can melt the wax down onto your eardrum.
  • Put a cotton bud or anything else in your ears as this may push the wax deeper into your canal or damage the skin in your ear canal.

Please do:

  • Use Olive Oil.
  • Olive oil gets between the wax and your ear canal. It loosens wax that has become stuck to your ear canal, making the wax easier (and more comfortable to remove).

Directions for using olive oil:

  1. Lie on your side.
  2. Put the olive oil down your canal as deep as possible, and then massage your ear (by holding a tissue over your ear) to get the olive oil to go between the wax and your ear canal.
  3. Wait for about 10 mins. You may have to do this morning and night for 2-3 days.

Once a gap forms between the wax and your ear canal, your ear may unblock, and you may feel a bit better.

At your appointment

If you have made an appointment for wax removal, it is a sign that you feel something is not right with your ears or hearing. When we look into your ears, we will let you know what we see. We will clean your ears using suction; sometimes, we use saline (salty water) or olive oil to help soften the wax before removing it.

Ear cleaning

Sometimes there is no wax. If this is the case, we will use the available time to investigate what is happening with your ears or hearing and suggest the best way forward. The appointment will be charged as normal. If we think you need a different type of appointment, eg a hearing test, we may need to rebook you for this at another time.

Other causes for blocked hearing are fluid behind the eardrum or sudden hearing loss. If we have time, we can do further assessments to investigate the cause of the blocked sensation, or we may need to book another appointment for this.

Occasionally, we are not able to remove all the ear wax. This may happen if the wax has been pushed down onto the eardrum or is impacted (hardened) onto the eardrum. If we find this, we may need to ask you to use olive oil in your ear canals for a few days to help the harder (stuck) wax come away from the skin in your ear canal. We may rebook you a few days later so we can remove it. This follow-up appointment will cost $40.
